MLS starts '13 looking toward development, growth

For a change, there is no buzz about Major League Soccer's latest expansion into a soccer-crazy market or about which aging European star is bringing his game to America.

And for the first time in six years, there's no talk about David Beckham.

On the surface, the 2013 MLS season that begins this weekend might seem ho-hum because of its stability.

But this year begins a new chapter, focused on developing the quality of play and continuing to raise the profile of a league that officials hope will become among the planet's elite within 10 years.

"There is no reason that in time Major League Soccer can't be competitive with the world's best," MLS commissioner Don Garber said. "It's going to take a lot of hard work and continued investment."

The season begins Saturday with Philadelphia hosting Kansas City. That'll be followed by a Canadian showdown with Vancouver hosting Toronto, Houston vs. DC United, FC Dallas vs. Colorado, Chivas USA vs. Columbus and Seattle vs. Montreal. Sunday, defending champion Los Angeles hosts Chicago, Portland welcomes New York and San Jose faces Real Salt Lake.

New England has a bye the first week of the season, while Seattle, Los Angeles and Houston have byes in Week 2 while participating in the CONCACAF Champions League.

For the first time since 2005, expansion is not a story line. After successful entries into Houston, Toronto, San Jose, Seattle, Philadelphia, Portland, Vancouver and Montreal, the league is standing firm at 19 teams. MLS wants its 20th team to be in New York, although there is an increased effort in Orlando that could eventually lead to the league filling a geographic hole in the Southeast.

"I think they remain a very good potential MLS ownership group and Orlando is an intriguing market," Garber said.

Instead of expansion, the talk entering the season is investment. The league announced Wednesday its intensions to raise the quality of play and infrastructure to make MLS one of the world's top leagues by the ambitious date of 2022. The goal was originally supposed to coincide with a successful World Cup bid. The U.S. won't be hosting that tournament - Qatar will - but MLS is sticking with its plan.

There are other leagues taking notice of the improved quality in the league in recent seasons. Geoff Cameron left MLS for England's Premier League in August, followed by Brek Shea and Roger Espinoza during the January transfer window, and Kei Kamara is on loan to Norwich until early May. Cameron and Shea joined fellow Americans Clint Dempsey, Tim Howard, Brad Guzan and Brad Friedel, among those who left MLS for the EPL years earlier.

While the depth of players is arguably at its peak, there are no obvious favorites entering the 2013 season.

Los Angeles starts the year seeking to become the first team to win three straight MLS Cup titles, but its roster will have a different look than the one that hoisted the title last December. Beckham is now at Paris Saint-Germain and it's unclear how long before midfielder Landon Donovan will be ready to actually contribute. Donovan is expected to join the Galaxy at the end of March following a personal sabbatical away from the game, but two months of the season could be lost before he finally plays.

A slow beginning to the season didn't dampen the Galaxy's title hopes a year ago. Los Angeles got off to a miserable start, only to find its form midseason and ended up rolling to its second consecutive title.

"Every year the league is getting tougher and tougher. It's always hard," Galaxy striker Robbie Keane said. "Last year wasn't easy. We had a tough ride at the start of the season. Toward the end, the last few months of the season, we were great. If we continue to keep doing what we're doing and everyone stays healthy, we've got as good a chance as anybody. But we know it's going to be tough, as it always is."

Seattle will enter the season with a roster still in flux thanks to the late acquisition of former All-Star Shalrie Joseph. Eddie Johnson reignited his career a season ago with 14 goals for Seattle and it may possess the most talented depth of midfielders in the league, but forward Fredy Montero is on loan in Colombia and defender Jeff Parke is now in Philadelphia. Seattle's management has made clear its focus this year is on the MLS Cup.

The team getting little talk before the season begins was the best one a year ago. San Jose rolled to the Supporters Shield with a 19-6-9 mark and 66 points thanks largely to the MVP season of Chris Wondolowski, who finished with 27 goals in the regular season, and returns most of its lineup. Portland should be improved under new coach Caleb Porter, while Real Salt Lake was forced by salary cap constraints to make offseason changes.

In the Eastern Conference, Kansas City was hit hardest by player movement, losing both Espinoza and Kamara to Premier League clubs for now. But KC also has one of the best defenses in the league and the majority of its roster back. Columbus could be on the rise again thanks to striker Federico Higuain, while Houston is a two-time MLS Cup finalist that was undefeated in its new stadium last season. DC United might have the most potent offensive attack in the East, led by Dwayne De Rosario.

New York underwent a significant offseason transition. Hans Backe is gone as coach, replaced by Mike Petke. Thierry Henry returns for his third full season while Kenny Cooper and Rafa Marquez are gone. Tim Cahill will be in his first full season with the Red Bulls after signing last summer from Everton in the hopes of finally finding a postseason breakthrough.

"To have a preseason with this team, with a new coach, new players, it's important I feel because to get the understanding because we've practically got a new working staff in the background and probably about six or seven new players," Cahill said. "It's basically a new team. It's something that spending these four or six weeks together is going to be important for the outcome of the season."

A look at how the brain processes information finds a distinct pattern in children with autism spectrum disorders. Using EEGs to track the brain's electrical cross-talk, researchers from Boston Children's Hospital have found a structural difference in brain connections. Compared with neurotypical children, those with autism have multiple redundant connections between neighboring brain areas at the expense of long-distance links.

The study, using a "network analysis" like that used to study airlines or electrical grids, may help in understanding some classic behaviors in autism. It was published February 27 in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Medicine, accompanied by a commentary.

"We examined brain networks as a whole in terms of their capacity to transfer and process information," says Jurriaan Peters, MD, of the Department of Neurology at Boston Children's Hospital, who is co-first author of the paper with Maxime Taquet, a PhD student in Boston Children's Computational Radiology Laboratory. "What we found may well change the way we look at the brains of autistic children."

Peters, Taquet and senior authors Simon Warfield, PhD, of the Computational Radiology Laboratory and Mustafa Sahin, MD, PhD, of Neurology, analyzed EEG recordings from two groups of autistic children: 16 children with classic autism, and 14 children whose autism is part of a genetic syndrome known as tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). They compared these readings with EEGs from two control groups46 healthy neurotypical children and 29 children with TSC but not autism.

In both groups with autism, there were more short-range connections within different brain region, but fewer connections linking far-flung areas.

A brain network that favors short-range over long-range connections seems to be consistent with autism's classic cognitive profilea child who excels at specific, focused tasks like memorizing streets, but who cannot integrate information across different brain areas into higher-order concepts.

"For example, a child with autism may not understand why a face looks really angry, because his visual brain centers and emotional brain centers have less cross-talk," Peters says. "The brain cannot integrate these areas. It's doing a lot with the information locally, but it's not sending it out to the rest of the brain."

Network analysisa hot emerging branch of cognitive neuroscienceshowed a quality called "resilience" in the children with autismthe ability to find multiple ways to get from point A to point B through redundant pathways.

"Much like you can still travel from Boston to Brussels even if London Heathrow is shut down, by going through New York's JFK airport for example, information can continue to be transferred between two regions of the brain of children with autism," says Taquet. "In such a network, no hub plays a specific role, and traffic may flow along many redundant routes."

This quality of redundancy is consistent with cellular and molecular evidence for decreased "pruning" of brain connections in autism. While it may be good for an airline, it may indicate a brain that responds in the same way to many different kinds of situations and is less able to focus on the stimuli that are most important.

"It's a simpler, less specialized network that's more rigid, less able to respond to stimulation from the environment," says Peters.

The study showed that both groups of children with tuberous sclerosis complex had reduced connectivity overall, but only those who also had autism had the pattern of increased short-range versus long-range connections (See image).

Under a recently announced NIH Autism Center of Excellence Grant, Peters and his colleagues will repeat the analysis as part of a multicenter study, taking EEG recordings prospectively under uniform conditions.

The current study builds on recent work by Peters, Sahin and colleagues, which imaged nerve fibers in autistic patients and showed structural abnormalities in brain connectivity. Other recent work at Boston Children's, led by Frank Duffy, PhD, of Neurology, looked at "coherence," or the degree of synchrony between any two given EEG signals, and found altered connectivity between brain regions in children with autism.

Yet another recent study, led by Boston Children's informatics researcher William Bosl, PhD, and Charles A. Nelson, PhD, research director of the Developmental Medicine Center, looked at the degree of randomness in EEG signals, an indirect indicator of connectivity, and found patterns that distinguished infants at increased risk for autism from controls.

Stocks climb higher in midday trading

Stocks added to their gains Wednesday, with the S&P 500 climbing back above 1,500 and the Dow clawing back above 14,000, lifted by a batch of upbeat earnings and following a cheery pending home sales report.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced, led by JPMorgan and Boeing, after posting a triple-digit gain in the previous session.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq also added to their gains. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, fell below 15.

All 10 key S&P sectors turned higher, led by materials and industrials.

"We're in a sideways process with the Dow around 14,000 and we'll probably be around here for a while," said Jeff Kleintop, chief market strategist at LPL Financial. "Profit and economic growth may be softer in Europe and we're probably due for a pullback, but I don't think it's going to be a big one. You want to buy into the dips and put capital to work."

On the economic front, pending home sales jumped 4.5 percent in January to 105.9, according to the National Association of Realtors, hitting its highest since April 2010. Economists in a Reuters survey expected a 1.5 percent gain compared with a 4.3 percent drop in the previous month.

Weekly mortgage applications declined for a third-consecutive week even as rates eased, according to the the Mortgage Bankers Association.

Durable goods orders declined 5.2 percent in January after gaining 4.3 percent in the prior month, according to the Commerce Department. But excluding transportation, durable goods orders increased 1.9 percent, the biggest gain since December 2011.

Flower Foods spiked after the packaged bakery goods company won the bid for Hostess' Wonder bread in a deal worth $360 million, CNBC learned.

In a busy day for retail earnings, Target posted quarterly results that topped expectations for the holiday quarter. But shares gave up their initial gains amid investor concern over the company's ability to reach its forecast, given its large-scale expansion plans in Canada.

Dollar Tree soared to lead the S&P 500 gainers after the discount retailer posted earnings and revenue that edged past expectations.

And TJX reported quarterly results that beat Wall Street expectations. In addition, the company announced a dividend hike and a new share repurchase program.

Coach jumped amid unconfirmed reports that the upscale retailer is exploring a sale of itself. Separately, the retailer said it has hired a former Nike executive to oversee the transformation of its stores.

Apple dipped ahead of the company's shareholders meeting. Shares gained in the previous session amid speculation the iPhone maker could announce plans to enhance shareholder value. Still, the stock has plunged more than 35 percent since hitting an all-time high of $705 back in September and has been trading below its 50-day moving average for nearly five months.

First Solar plunged nearly 15 percent after the solar panel maker posted revenue and outlook that fell short of Wall Street expectations. In addition, Baird cut its rating on the company to "neutral" from "outperform" and lowered its price target to $25 from $30.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke appeared before the House Financial Services Committee in his second day of testimony.

On Tuesday, Bernanke Bernanke said the Fed will continue its quantitative easing (QE) program until clear signs of an economic recovery are visible and also urged lawmakers to avoid sharp spending cuts due to kick in at the beginning of March.

"There was little in the way of surprise yesterday by Chairman Bernanke who, as expected, gave a stern defense of QE as an important monetary policy tool in the current crisis," wrote Derek Halpenny, European head of global markets research at the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi.

European shares closed higher, thanks to a successful bond auction in Italy.

Earlier in the day, Anheuser-Busch Inbev forecast a weak start to the year in the U.S. and Brazil, after posting slightly lower-than-expected earnings in the fourth quarter of 2012. The Belgian brewer is the world's biggest beer maker and produces Budweiser and Stella Artois.

Meanwhile, Franco-German defense firm EADS predicted higher profits in 2013 as it confirmed an upswing in 2012, driven by efforts to cut costs, and strong deliveries of passenger jets. EADS shares rose by around five percent on the news. U.S. rival Boeing posted results in January that also topped expectations.

Known as huanglongbing (HLB)? -- Chinese for yellow dragon disease -- it is caused by bacteria that hide in the salivary glands of invasive insects known as Asian citrus psyllids. The pests arrived in the U.S. in the late 1990s and have spread the disease by injecting germs into plants as they feed on sap from their leaves. There is no cure for the disease.?

Huanglongbing, which is also called citrus greening, was first spotted in Florida?the heart of America?s orange juice industry -- in 2005 and has since spread to Georgia, South Carolina, Texas and southern California. Nearly every commercial grove in Florida has been infected, costing the state billions of dollars and thousands of lost jobs. Late in 2012, the first Asian citrus psyllid was spotted in California?s commercial groves--which grow nearly 80 percent of all the fresh oranges produced in the U.S.--most likely heralding the arrival of the disease.?

Scientists are looking at many different approaches to managing and eradicating the disease. Many say the only long-term solution will be genetic modification, which is still years away. In the meantime, entomologists are using biological control -- the practice of releasing living organisms to prey on pests -- as a means of keeping psyllid populations in check in residential areas where pesticide sprays have failed. (In Los Angeles, for example, psyllids multiplied so quickly on backyard citrus trees that state authorities couldn?t keep pace). Mark and Christina Hoddle, entomologists at the University of California, Riverside, have imported tiny wasps from Pakistan to feast on Asian citrus psyllids and have released them at more than 100 sites in Los Angeles, Riverside, and Orange and San Bernardino counties. (The wasps do not sting humans). In this video, Christina releases a vial of wasps--29 females and 15 males--on a curry bush in the parking lot of a Los Angeles hotel. (Curry is a citrus relative). The site may seem random, but in fact the Hoddles used state data to identify this site as being particularly infested with Asian citrus psyllids, which Christina calls ?ACP? for short in this clip. She also talks about having previously scouted the shrub to make sure it has plenty of psyllid nymphs at the 4th and 5th instars, which are the two life stages that the wasps attack.

Samsung to introduce 'the next Galaxy' on March 14

"Ready 4 the show," an invitation sent to members of the press teases, blatantly hinting that we'll be seeing the Galaxy S 4 ? the highly anticipated follow-up to the Galaxy S III smartphone ? at the event being held by Samsung on March 14.

The event will take place in New York City at 7 p.m. ET. (We'll be there to cover it live, of course.)

The Galaxy S 4 ? we're assuming by the big "4" that the only change to Samsung's incredibly consistent naming approach will be to drop the Roman numerals ? will be the company's newest flagship device.

A poster spotted by AnandTech's Brian Klug during a visit to Samsung's demo room at the Consumer Electronics Show in early January suggests that the Galaxy S 4 could be rocking a 4.99-inch 1080p screen with a whopping 440 pixels per inch. While the iPhone 5 offers the significantly less dense 326 ppi, it's worth noting that it's practically impossible for human eyes to tell the difference. After a certain point, the individual pixels simply become indistinguishable.

That's about all we know (or think we know) about the Galaxy S 4 for now, so Samsung could have plenty of surprises waiting up its sleeves come March 14.

That would seem to indicate one of two things: Either the talent in the minor league system is better than the national pundits think or the Phillies are going to be in for a long season.

I am not a prospects guy so I can?t say much beyond what I read in Law and Mayo?s rankings. And to be fair: the measure of Ruben Amaro?s success has been and still is, at least for now, how well his veteran-laden club does in the short term, not how things play out in the long term.

Microsoft joins list of companies recently hacked

REDMOND, Wash. (AP) ? Microsoft has joined the list of prominent technology companies confirming they have been hit by a recent computer hacking attack.

In a blog posting Friday, Microsoft said it had found no evidence that any customer data had been heisted.

Microsoft Corp. gave few other details about the break-in, except to say that was it similar to a hacking attack that online social networking leader Facebook Inc. disclosed last week. Facebook had said its investigation had discovered other companies had been hacked, but didn't identify the other victims.

Like Facebook, Microsoft says it is still investigating how malicious software was planted on what it said were a small number of its computers.

Online messaging service Twitter also recently disclosed that hackers may have stolen information about 250,000 of its users.

Study says rising seas will hit Hawaii hardest

The Hawaiian Islands, seen from space, are the most vulnerable to uneven global sea level rise due to melting glaciers and ice sheets.

Melting ice in Greenland, Antarctica and elsewhere will push up seas unevenly around the world, according to a new study that finds some of the highest waters will inundate Honolulu, Hawaii.?

At the poles, sea levels will actually fall because of the way sea, land and ice interact. For example, the sheer mass of water held in ice in Greenland and Antarctica generates a gravitational field that pulls in the surrounding water. As ice there melts, the gravitational pull weakens and the water is redistributed.

In addition, the melting ice on Antarctica and Greenland will lighten the load on the land beneath it, allowing the land to rebound up and the seafloor to drop a corresponding amount.

"Meaning that as the seafloor deepens, there is another component of sea-level fall, ironically, around these piles of ice," Charles Fletcher, a geologist at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, explained to NBC News.

Fletcher was not involved in the new study but is familiar with its findings, particularly the vulnerabilities of Hawaii ? and, more broadly, tropical islands in the Pacific Ocean ? to global sea-level rise.?

Modelling glacier wastage
The research was co-led by Giorgio Spada, a professor of Earth physics at the University of Urbino in Italy. It is "the first study to examine a regional pattern of sea-level changes using sophisticated model predictions of the wastage of glaciers and ice sheets over the next century," he told NBC News via email.

He and colleagues used the model to investigate sea level under two future scenarios of sea-level rise: a mid-range, likely-to-happen one and one closer to the upper limit of what?s plausible. Under both, maximum sea-level rise is expected at Honolulu, the researchers reported Feb. 13 in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.?

In the mid-range scenario, worst-affected equatorial oceans could see as much as two feet of sea-level rise, when the fact that water expands as it warms is taken into account. Under the high end, the rate of sea-level change in Honolulu will exceed 0.3 inches a year during the second half of this century.?

Sea-level rise will also be greater than average in Western Australia and throughout the atolls and islands in the tropical Pacific Ocean. In Europe, sea levels will rise, but will likely be lower than the global average given the continent?s proximity to Greenland and the dropping sea levels there.

Incomplete picture
But the picture is far from complete, cautioned Fletcher.

"What this paper and other models have not been able to do because, ultimately, it is too chaotic, is to predict what the winds will be doing," he explained.?

For example, enhanced trade winds associated with a phenomenon called the Pacific Decadal Oscillation are pushing the Pacific Ocean surface westward. As a result, annual sea-level rise in Hawaii is currently about half the global average rate of about 0.1 inch a year, while in the western Pacific the rate is more than 0.3 inch a year.

This may, or may not, change with the next phase of the oscillation, noted Fletcher, whose own research recently highlighted how groundwater beneath land rises with sea levels and could breach the surface, causing severe flooding in places such as Honolulu.

"Overall, the (new) paper is one more twig in the bundle of concerns that low-lying coastal cities, and especially Pacific islands, are highly vulnerable to this problem of sea-level rise," he said, adding that "these Pacific islands have contributed almost nothing to the problem of global warming."

Why Won't the Government Let You Unlock Your Phone? 100,000 People Want to Know

Suppose you're upset with your cell-phone carrier, and you'd like to switch. Under current law, you can take your phone number with you when you leave. But if you want to take your phone? Forget it.

Ever since an obscure rule protecting the process of "unlocking" expired from copyright law last month, it's been illegal to port your device to another carrier. In fact, any American who's ever unlocked his or her phone is now at risk for steep fines, court battles with carriers, and even jail time.

But a team of copyright activists has been lobbying the government to keep unlocking legal. And early Thursday morning, they won a small victory: Their petition to the White House finally accumulated 100,000 signatures, meaning it must now be met with an official government response.

"A hundred thousand people should be taken seriously," said Derek Khanna, one of those leading the charge. "There hasn't been a real concise explanation about why ? individuals who unlock their own phones [should] be legally liable for up to five years in prison."

In particular, the petition requests that President Obama ask the Library of Congress to reconsider its stance on unlocking--and if that doesn't work, to press Congress for legislative action. An ideal bill would protect four activities, Khanna told me: adaptive technology for the blind, such as the kind that scans books and handwriting into text computers can display; backing up DVDs to your computer;?jail-breaking your phone so that you can modify it beyond the manufacturer's preferred limits; and unlocking.

Hold on a second. How did the Library of Congress gain the power to control what you do with your devices? It comes down to a provision in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act that lets the Librarian of Congress set exemptions for things that "circumvent" anti-piracy systems. Unlocking and gaining top-level privileges to modify your phone have so far been protected by these exemptions--and in fact, jail-breaking your phone will still be legal into 2015. But these exemptions have to be renewed every three years. This time, when the unlocking exemption came up, the Library of Congress demurred. (A call to LOC wasn't returned.)

This means wireless companies that don't like the idea of customers leaving their service with their phones can theoretically sue.

Obama could still rebuff the petitioners, but he would be taking an unpopular position, according to Khanna.

"If the White House wants to defend that position, that's up to them," Khanna said. "I don't think they will defend that, but they could."

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? A group of San Francisco Star Wars fans who want to travel to a galaxy not that far away have created a combat choreography class for Jedis-in-training with their weapon of choice: the lightsaber.

At a recent class, Alain Bloch, the self-proclaimed Jedi Master at Golden Gate Knights, demonstrated a slicing technique. He has a background in martial arts and stage combat.

"Always be mindful of the presence!" he said, donning a Luke Skywalker outfit and a green lightsaber.

With Star Wars movie music coursing through the dance studio, his disciples clutch their neon-glowing lightsabers.

These self-proclaimed "Star Wars geeks" slice and parry as they follow Bloch's lead, and get a little exercise, too.

People in a recent class in the city's South of Market district, including a couple on a date, said they embraced their quirkiness and had even converted some of the skeptical into the "Jedi order."

"At first they giggle because they think it's a little silly. Then they're like, actually that's kind of cool," said Julio Reyes, a student. "Then they start asking more questions."

Not all Jedis-in-training are rooting for the good guys. Some came to embrace "the dark side of the force."

"I just love Vader, period," said the Darth Vader-clad student Gary Ripper. "Just his voice, the way he moved, the power of him. I just liked the powerfulness of him."

Upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 with FSX present

Before anyone autoposts links to things, this is NOT "will FSX run on Windows 7".
My question is whether running the Microsoft upgrade from Vista to 7 will cause any problems with my FSX installation. Theoretically, the upgrade is designed to change the operating system with all currently installed software sitting there happily, but as we all know these things don't always go smoothly! I'd rather not have to re-install FSX due to the large number of downloaded addons, so before anyone suggests I'd be better off just re-installing it, that's not the favoured option.

I love the smell of napalm on my cornflakes.
