95% Argo

'Argo'. Ben Affleck, take a bow. A magnificent achievement in pacing and tension, bringing an unbelievable true story to life. There's a line towards the beginning, when they're trying to sell The Hollywood Option, that goes something like, "And everybody knows they'd shoot in Stalingrad with Pol Pot directing if it would sell tickets." This cynical undercurrent that still permeates through Hollywood today, arguably more so, grounds this film in a believability that would be hard to artificially create solely for this film. It's one of the many cheeky shots the film takes, having a go at acting, directing and everything in between. Affleck's camera movements are frenetic and clear all at once, swooping, circling and darting rapidly on occasion, most noticeable in the opening hysteria at the embassy. The last twenty or so minutes, where 'Argo' ratchets up the tension, is owed in large to some brilliant editing, switching between the four parties involved, while never needing to cheat the audience in taking them down a false path. There was an audible sign of relief in the theatre when that plane finally takes off! Then there's Ben Affleck the actor. First things first. I have a large man-crush on his beard. Affleck doesn't overplay his character, but he nails the emotional moments, and I was totally on board his crazy plan, with his heart very much in the right place. The supporting cast is insane, but Bryan Cranston and Alan Arkin shine the brightest, getting the killer lines written by Chris Terrio.I loved 'Gone Baby Gone' and 'The Town'. It gives me great pleasure to see Affleck stretching out from his familiar Boston, making something completely different, and getting it so right.

Moga Mobile Gaming System Review - Machinima.com | Inside ...

Manufacturer: PowerA / Played With: Samsung Galaxy S3 / Price: $49.99

MOGAbyPowerA_Media_Front

The mobile application industry has exploded in recent years following the introduction and mainstream acceptance of smartphones. At the heart of that explosion, I believe, is gaming. Since cellular phones became a device that any average Joe could attain, software in the form of games as simple as Snake and Tetris have provided small, focused entertainment experiences while on the bus, at the doctor?s office, or anywhere we could whip out a phone. Now, in an age where mobile devices are exceedingly more powerful in their processing capabilities, a fine line is drawn between simple games needing no more than basic touch controls (e.g. Angry Birds), and larger-scale games that require a bit more tactile functionality.

Enter the Moga from PowerA, a device focused on the idea of changing the way you play your mobile games. This Bluetooth controller is all about handing you the proper controls needed for some of the more ?button hungry? games on the Android Market. We?ve seen it at shows like E3 and PAX Prime over the course of the last year, but I?ve finally been given the final product to spend some time with, and suffice to say it?s a pretty impressive piece of hardware that doesn?t break the bank.

MOGAbyPowerA_Media_Phone_Hero

Design

The Moga is a sleek-looking device. PowerA has taken an interesting rectangular approach to the controller?s overall design, adding smooth, rounded-off edges and splashing on a glossy black coat of paint to top it off. The back of the device is layered with an all-encompassing rubber grip for added handling and stability. It?s very light and noticeably thin, and easily fits into the side pocket of a backpack, basketball shorts, or a jean back pocket.

Since smartphones are inherently touch-controlled, the Moga?s main focus is giving you additional control options for games that support it ? and boy, does it give you options. Two analog sticks, four face buttons, two triggers and the other two usual suspects: the start and select buttons. In the center of it all is a small latch that flips upward to reveal another not only another Moga logo, but a place to store the Android phone or small tablet you?re pairing with. The top hinge slides upward to fit virtually any Android phone and some miniature tablets. Just make sure they?re running Android 2.3 or higher, that?s Moga?s bottom line.

MOGAbyPowerA_Media_Detail7

Unlike something like a PlayStation Vita whose buttons stick out above its flat face (just begging to be bent or damaged), the analog sticks and buttons on the Moga are almost completely flush with the surface of the device. As you might imagine, this makes stowing the Moga much less of a worry ? no more need to be overly-cautious about damaging the sticks and buttons when tossing it in your pack or pocket.

If I have a complaint about the Moga, it?s that the analog sticks aren?t as free-moving as I?d like ? they?re a bit on the ?mushy? side. Playing games like Asphault 7: Heat can be trying at times, as I feel like I?m having to press harder than I should to turn cars around corners. Even games like Sonic CD saw a pretty drastic delay in pressing the stick and seeing movement on-screen. This could, however, very well be a development issue ? as playing Virtua Tennis Challenge did not return the same problems. In fact, tennis simulation on the Moga might be my favorite so far ? it?s just extremely well implemented and plays smoothly.

However, unlike the sticks, the front-facing buttons have a satisfying sense of tactility to them (as do the triggers) ? they have a great click when you press them. Sure, it might be a little loud in a quiet room, but it?s better than having mushy buttons with little responsiveness.

Functionality

A piece of hardware is, as the saying goes, truly only as good as the software that supports it, and thankfully, a number of game developers and publishers have sprung up to acknowledge the potential of the Moga. Including names not to be ignored like SEGA, Gameloft, Atari and Namco Bandai; the handful of games currently available show great promise for the future of the Moga. So long as top-tier games that require more complex control look to the Moga for assistance, hardcore phone gamers should be in luck.

photo (3)

Thankfully, software developers are being given the tools to map their touch-focused games with some relative level of ease with the Moga?s Pivot App software. This included app not only allows game makers to much more easily implement tactile controls in their games, but the app also acts as a hub and marketplace for users for finding other games supported by the Moga. And since only games that are updated or designed with the Moga in mind will support the controller interface, the inclusion of this app was a critical good move on PowerA?s part.

All you can do (should you decide to buy a Moga) is hope that developers and publishers continue to support the device and allow more games to open up development for it.

MOGAbyPowerA_Media_Tablet_Front

Bottom Line

PowerA is attempting something with the Moga that many have considered attempting, but have failed in marketing themselves correctly to consumers, developers and publishers; didn?t make a good overall product; or simply never turned their concepts into reality. The Moga is a solid example of how more advanced games can be handled on mobile phones without the need for a more expensive device like the Nintendo 3DS or PlayStation Vita.

Of course, mobile phones aren?t near as powerful as the Vita, but they?re shaping up pretty well as the years pass on, and the Moga provides a pretty tactile alternative to incessantly tapping, sliding, and swiping a touchscreen.

The Moga is available now from a variety of online and brick-and-mortar retailers for $49.99.

Smokers miss work more often, cost UK billions | Yahoo! Health

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Smokers miss an average of two or three more days of work each year than non-smokers, according to a new analysis of 29 past studies.

Based on that finding, absenteeism due to smoking cost the UK alone 1.4 billion pounds - or $2.25 billion - last year, researchers calculated.

"Clearly the most important message for any individual's health is, ?Quit smoking,' but I think that message is pretty well out there," said Douglas Levy, a tobacco and public health researcher from the Harvard Medical School in Boston who wasn't involved in the new study.

But, he added, "I think (the study) does point to the fact that this is something that doesn't just affect the individual, it affects the economy as well."

The analysis included studies conducted between 1960 and 2011 in Europe, Australia and New Zealand, the United States and Japan, with a total of over 71,000 public and private sector workers.

Researchers asked the workers about their current and former smoking habits and used surveys or medical and employee records to track how often they were absent over an average of two years.

Combining the results, Jo Leonardi-Bee of the University of Nottingham, UK and her colleagues found current smokers were 33 percent more likely to miss work than non-smokers. They were absent an average of 2.7 extra days per year than people who abstained.

Former smokers fell somewhere in between current and never-smokers when it came to absenteeism.

The researchers calculated that current smokers were still 19 percent more likely to miss work than ex-smokers - so encouraging smokers to quit could help reverse some of the lost-work trends.

"The results of this study suggest that smoking cessation in the workplace could potentially result in cost savings for employers from reduced absenteeism," Leonardi-Bee's team reported in the journal Addiction.

The 1.4 billion pounds lost in the UK due to smoking-related absenteeism is only one cost of smoking in the workplace, according to Leonardi-Bee and her colleagues. Others include productivity lost to smoking breaks and the cost of cigarette-related fire damage.

In the analysis, smoking was tied to workers' short-term absences as well as leaves of four weeks or more.

"There's some portion of it which is just folks getting sick more often," such as with colds and other bugs, Levy told Reuters Health. Other people, he said, may need more serious medical attention that keeps them away from work.

Levy's own research has shown kids living with smokers are more likely to be absent from school. Secondhand smoke is tied to a range of health ailments, from asthma to heart attacks - so employees who light up may have to miss work more often to stay at home with sick family members.

Approximately one in five adults in both the UK and the U.S. is a current smoker.

According to the most recent data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cigarette smoking was responsible for $193 billion in health-related economic losses each year between 2000 and 2004 in the U.S., about half of which was due to lost productivity.

Levy said the most important finding from the new review is the reduction in absenteeism after workers quit smoking. That idea supports companies funding smoking-cessation classes and other workplace health programs, he said.

"There's a growing sense that employee wellness is important," according to Levy. "As health care costs start to increase and this becomes something which is really squeezing employers, this is something they're trying to do to address that."

Free Webinar Targets Sustainable Cultural ... - Leisure Group Travel

Dr. Susan Guyette, Sustainable Travel International?s cultural tourism advisor and author of the new book Sustainable Cultural Tourism, will conduct a free webinar on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 12:00 p.m. EST.

The seminar will introduce a value-based planning and development method for cultural tourism. Guyette?s approach emphasizes a cyclical process of community-based evaluation and redirection, with indigenous methodology demonstrating the way forward. She contends that sustainability is possible through a worldview that respects cultural values and natural cycles, rather than a linear, profit-based economic perspective.

Susan Guyette has 25 years of direct experience working with indigenous and rural communities in cultural tourism, as well as cultural centers and museums. Prior books include Sustainable Cultural Tourism: Small-Scale Solutions and Planning for Balanced Development: A Guide for Rural and Native American Communities. She is the co-author of Zen Birding: Connect in Nature and the author of several texts for American Indian Studies. Obama and Romney: Where they stand on the issues

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A look at where Democratic President Barack Obama and Republican presidential rival Mitt Romney stand on a selection of issues:

ABORTION and BIRTH CONTROL:

Obama: Supports access to abortion. Health care law requires contraceptives to be available for free for women enrolled in workplace health plans, including access to morning-after pill, which does not terminate a pregnancy but is considered tantamount to an abortion pill by some religious conservatives. Supported requiring girls 16 and under to get a prescription for the morning-after pill, available without a prescription for older women.

Romney: Opposes access to abortion except in cases of rape, incest or risk to the woman's life. Previously supported access. Says state law should guide abortion rights, and Roe v. Wade should be reversed by a future Supreme Court ruling. But says Roe v. Wade is law of the land until that happens and should not be challenged by federal legislation seeking to overturn abortion rights affirmed by that court decision. "So I would live within the law, within the Constitution as I understand it, without creating a constitutional crisis. But I do believe Roe v. Wade should be reversed to allow states to make that decision." Said he would end federal aid to Planned Parenthood.

___

DEBT:

Obama: Failed in pledge to cut the deficit "we inherited" by half by the end of his first term. The deficit when he took office was $1.2 trillion, and the $800 billion stimulus bill Obama signed soon afterward increased the shortfall to more than $1.4 trillion. The deficit for the recently completed 2012 budget year registered at $1.2 trillion, marking the fourth consecutive year of trillion-dollar-plus red ink. Now promises to cut projected deficits by $4 trillion over 10 years, a goal that will require Congress to raise the capital gains tax, boost taxes on households earning more than $250,000 a year and impose a minimum 30 percent tax on incomes above $1 million. The target also assumes a reduction in the amount of interest the government must pay on its debt and incorporates $1 trillion in cuts already signed into law. Nation's debt surpassed $16 trillion this year. Federal spending is estimated at 23.5 percent of gross domestic product this year, up from about 20 percent in the previous administration, and is forecast to decline to 21.8 percent by 2016.

Romney: Promises to cut $500 billion per year from the federal budget by 2016 to bring spending below 20 percent of the U.S. economy and to balance it by 2020, but vital specifics are lacking. At the same time would increase military spending, reverse $716 billion in Medicare cuts and cut taxes. Defended 2008 bailout of financial institutions as a necessary step to avoid the system's collapse, opposed the bailout of General Motors and Chrysler. Stayed silent on the debt-ceiling deal during its negotiation, only announcing his opposition to the final agreement shortly before lawmakers voted on it. Instead, endorsed GOP "cut, cap and balance" bill that had no chance of enactment. Favors constitutional balanced budget amendment. Proposes 10 percent cut in federal workforce, elimination of $1.6 billion in Amtrak subsidies and cuts of $600 million in support for the arts and broadcasting.

___

ECONOMY:

Obama: Term marked by high unemployment, a deep recession that began in previous administration and officially ended within six months, and gradual recovery. Persistently high jobless rates of over 8 percent until the rate dropped to 7.8 in September, the same as it was in February 2009, Obama's first full month in office. The rate hit a high of 10 percent in October 2009. Businesses have added jobs for more than two years straight while public sector jobs have lagged. Obama responded to the recession with a roughly $800 billion stimulus plan that nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated cut the unemployment rate by up to 1.8 percentage points. Continued implementation of Wall Street and auto industry bailouts begun under George W. Bush. Proposes tax breaks for U.S. manufacturers producing domestically or repatriating jobs from abroad and tax penalties for U.S. companies outsourcing jobs. Won approval of South Korea, Panama and Colombia free-trade pacts begun under previous administration, completing the biggest round of trade liberalization since the North American Free Trade Agreement and other pacts went into effect in the 1990s.

Romney: Favors lower taxes, less regulation, balanced budget, more trade deals to spur growth. Would replace jobless benefits with unemployment savings accounts. Proposes replacing certain provisions of the law toughening financial industry regulations after the meltdown in that sector. Proposes changing the law tightening accounting corporate regulations to ease requirements for mid-sized companies. "We don't want to tell the world that Republicans are against all regulation. No, regulation is necessary to make a free market work. But it has to be updated and modern."

___

EDUCATION:

Obama: Has approved waivers freeing states from the most onerous requirements of the Bush-era No Child Left Behind law with their agreement to improve how they prepare and evaluate students. "Race to the Top" grant competition has rewarded winning states with billions of dollars for pursuing education policies Obama supports. Won approval for a college tuition tax credit worth up to $10,000 over four years and more money for Pell Grants for low-income college students. Wants Congress to agree to reduce federal aid to colleges that go too far in raising tuition. Average tuition at four-year public colleges surged 26 percent in his term, by $1,800 to $8,655, as states cut aid, but federal grants and tax credits sheltered students from most of the increase, leaving them paying only $570 more.

Romney: Supported the federal accountability standards of No Child Left Behind law. In 2007, said he was wrong earlier in career when he wanted the Education Department shut because he came to see the value of the federal government in "holding down the interests of the teachers' unions" and putting kids and parents first. Has said the student testing, charter-school incentives and teacher evaluation standards of Obama's "Race to the Top" competition "make sense" although the federal government should have less control of education. Says increases in federal student aid encourage tuition to go up, too. Wants to see private lenders return to the federal student loan program.

___

ENERGY and ENVIRONMENT:

Obama: Ordered temporary moratorium on deep-water drilling after the massive BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, but U.S. produced more oil in 2010 than it has since 2003 and all forms of energy production have increased under Obama. Approved drilling plan in Arctic Ocean opposed by environmentalists. Proposes Congress give oil market regulators more power to control price manipulation by speculators and stiffer fines for doing so. Sets goal of cutting oil imports by half by 2020.

Achieved historic increases in fuel economy standards for automobiles that will save money at the pump while raising the cost of new vehicles. Achieved first-ever regulations on heat-trapping gases blamed for global warming and on toxic mercury pollution from power plants. The rules on mercury could force dozens of older coal-fired plants to shut or spend billions to upgrade. Spent heavily on green energy and has embraced nuclear power as a clean source.

Failed to persuade a Democratic Congress to pass limits he promised on carbon emissions. Shelved plan to toughen health standards on lung-damaging smog. Rejected Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada but supports fast-track approval of a segment of it. Proposes ending subsidies to oil industry but has failed to persuade Congress to do so.

Romney: Pledges U.S. will become independent of energy sources outside of North America by 2020, through more aggressive exploitation of domestic oil, gas, coal and other resources and quick approval of the Keystone XL pipeline. Supports opening the Atlantic and Pacific outer continental shelves to drilling, as well as Western lands, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and offshore Alaska. He also has proposed reducing obstacles to coal, natural gas and nuclear energy development. Proposes accelerating drilling permits in areas where exploration has already been approved for developers with good safety records.

Says green power has yet to become viable and the causes of climate change are unknown. Proposes to remove carbon dioxide from list of pollutants controlled by Clean Air Act and amend clean water and air laws to ensure the cost of complying with regulations is balanced against environmental benefit. Says cap and trade would "rocket energy prices."

___

FOREIGN POLICY:

Obama: Opposes a near-term military strike on Iran, either by the U.S. or by Israel, to sabotage nuclear facilities that could be misused to produce a nuclear weapon. Says the U.S. will never tolerate a nuclear-armed Iran but negotiation and pressure through sanctions are the right way to prevent that outcome. Reserves the right to one day conclude that only a military strike can stop Iran from getting the bomb. Declined to repeat the Libya air power commitment for Syrian opposition, instead seeks to build international consensus toward the goal of persuading President Bashar Assad to leave and to press Russia and China to stop shielding his government from international sanctions. Chastised Israel for continuing to build housing settlements in disputed areas and has pressed both sides to begin a new round of peace talks based on the land borders established after the 1967 Arab-Israeli conflict. Signed law to expand military and civilian cooperation with Israel. The law affirms U.S. support for negotiating the establishment of a Palestinian state, reflecting a U.S. bipartisan consensus. Opposes citing China as a currency manipulator, which could lead to broad trade sanctions, instead pressing the matter through diplomacy and aggressively bringing unfair-trade cases against China to the World Trade Organization.

Romney: Appears to present a clearer U.S. military threat to Iran and has spoken in more permissive terms about Israel's right to act against Iran's nuclear facilities without explicitly approving of such a step and while describing a U.S. attack against Iran as a last resort. "Of course you take military action" if sanctions and internal opposition fail to dissuade Tehran from making a nuclear weapon, he has said. Would identify those in Syrian opposition who share U.S. values, then work with U.S. allies to "ensure they obtain the arms they need to defeat" Syrian government. But has not proposed direct U.S. arms supplies to rebels and opposes U.S. military intervention for now. Associates himself more closely with hardline Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, pledges more military assistance to Israel and agreed with Israel's position that Jerusalem is the capital, disregarding the Palestinians' claim to the eastern sector annexed by Israel in 1967 in a move that is not internationally recognized. Has branded Russia the "No. 1 geopolitical foe" of the U.S. and threatened to label China a currency manipulator in a move that could lead to broad trade sanctions and a trade war.

___

GAY RIGHTS:

Obama: Supports legal recognition of same-sex marriage, a matter decided by states. Opposed that recognition in 2008 presidential campaign ? and in 2004 Senate campaign ? while supporting the extension of legal rights and benefits to same-sex couples in civil unions. Achieved repeal of the military ban on openly gay service members. Has not achieved repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, which denies federal recognition of same-sex marriages and affirms the right of states to refuse to recognize such marriages. Administration has ceased defending the law in court, but it remains on the books. Directed government to require all hospitals that get Medicare and Medicaid financing to grant visitation privileges to gay and lesbian partners of patients. But has declined to issue an executive order barring federal contractors from discriminating against gay employees, holding out instead for congressional action to extend such protection to workers in all sectors. In 1996 Illinois state Senate campaign, stated: "I favor legalizing same-sex marriages," a position he later abandoned at the federal level and now embraces again. "I've just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married," he said.

Romney: Opposes legal recognition of same-sex marriage and says it should be banned with a constitutional amendment, not left to states. "Marriage is not an activity that goes on within the walls of a state." Also opposes civil unions "if they are identical to marriage other than by name," but says states should be left to decide what rights and benefits should be allowed under those unions. Says certain domestic partnership benefits ? largely unspecified ? as well as hospital visitation rights are appropriate but "others are not." Says he would not seek to restore the ban on openly gay military members. Asserted in 2002 campaign for Massachusetts governor that "all citizens deserve equal rights, regardless of sexual preference," in tune with statements years earlier as a Senate candidate that equality for gays and lesbians should be a "mainstream concern." But did not explicitly support marriage recognition and, as governor, opposed same-sex marriage when courts legalized it in Massachusetts. "My view is that marriage itself is between a man and a woman."

___

GUNS:

Obama: Has not pushed for gun control measures as president. Signed laws letting people carry concealed weapons in national parks and in checked bags on Amtrak trains. Favors "robust steps, within existing law" to address gun issues, White House says. Voices support for renewed ban on assault-type weapons but has not tried to get that done. Has not swung behind longshot Democratic bill, introduced after the Colorado movie theater shooting in July, to let only licensed dealers sell ammunition, require police to be notified after any sale of more than 1,000 rounds to an unlicensed person and require buyers who aren't licensed dealers to show a photo ID. Backed tougher gun control as Illinois and U.S. senator, including proposals to renew the assault-weapons ban and require background checks for buyers at gun shows.

Romney: Opposes stricter gun control laws. Suggested after the Colorado shooting that he favors tougher enforcement of existing gun laws, although the theater attack was carried out with legally obtained weapons. As Massachusetts governor, vowed in 2002 to protect the state's "tough gun laws," and in 2004 signed a Massachusetts ban on assault weapons. Quadrupled state's gun-licensing fee but loosened rules on the licenses and extended their duration. In 2008 primary campaign, said he would have signed the federal assault weapons ban if it had come to him as president, but he opposed any new gun legislation.

HEALTH CARE:

Obama: Achieved landmark overhaul putting U.S. on path to universal coverage now that Supreme Court has upheld the law's mandate for almost everyone to obtain insurance. Under the law, insurers will be banned from denying coverage to people with pre-existing illness, tax credits for middle-income people will subsidize premiums, people without work-based insurance will have access to new markets and small business gets help for offering insurance. Millions of low-income uninsured are to be reached through expansion of Medicaid with hefty subsidies to states, but Supreme Court limited federal power to penalize states that want to opt out of the expansion. Law's biggest changes start in 2014. "Nobody is going to go broke just because they get sick. And Americans will no longer be denied or dropped by their insurance companies just when they need care the most. That's what change is."

Health care law improves Medicare benefits, adding better coverage for seniors with high prescription costs as well as removing co-pays for a set of preventive benefits. It also cuts Medicare payments to hospitals and other providers by more than $700 billion over a decade. Those cuts are being used to provide health insurance to more working-age Americans, and the government also counts them as extending the life of the Medicare trust fund. Any future deficit-reduction deal, though, is likely to increase costs for middle-class and upper-income Medicare recipients, and Obama has indicated a willingness to consider increasing the eligibility from 65 to 67.

Romney: Promises to repeal Obama's health care law modeled largely after his universal health care achievement in Massachusetts because he says states, not Washington, should drive policy on the uninsured. Would expand individual tax-advantaged medical savings accounts and let the savings be used for insurance premiums as well as personal medical costs. Would let insurance be sold across state lines to expand options, and restrict malpractice awards to restrain health care costs. Says he would protect people with pre-existing conditions, though his plan only does so for those who maintain continuous coverage, not a major change from federal protections in effect before Obama's health care overhaul.

On Medicare, would introduce "generous" but undetermined subsidies to help future retirees buy private insurance or join a government plan modeled on traditional Medicare. Gradually increase the eligibility age to 67. Repealing Obama's health care law would roll back improved benefits for seniors unless Congress acts to protect them. It also would reverse Obama's Medicare cuts to hospitals and other providers. This would have the unintended consequence of hastening the insolvency of Medicare's trust fund. Would turn Medicaid program over to the states as a block grant.

___

IMMIGRATION:

Obama: Issued directive in June that immigrants brought illegally to the United States as children be exempted from deportation and granted work permits if they apply, a step that could benefit 800,000 to 1.4 million. "It's a temporary measure that lets us focus our resources wisely while offering some justice to these young people." Took the step after failing to deliver on a promised immigration overhaul, with the defeat of legislation that would have created a path to citizenship for young illegal immigrants enrolled in college or enlisted in the armed forces. Says he is still committed to it. Government has deported a record number of illegal immigrants under Obama, nearly 400,000 in each of the last three years.

Romney: Favors U.S.-Mexico border fence, opposes education benefits to illegal immigrants. Opposes offering legal status to illegal immigrants who attend college but would do so for those who serve in the armed forces. Would establish a national immigration-status verification system for employers and punish them if they hire noncitizens who do not prove their authorized status. The government's existing E-Verify system is voluntary. Proposes more visas for holders of advanced degrees in math, science and engineering who have U.S. job offers and would award permanent residency to foreign students who graduate from U.S. schools with a degree in those fields. Would end caps on visas for spouses and minor children of legal immigrants. Would honor work permits granted to illegal immigrants under Obama's policy of protecting those who came as children, but not accept new applicants. Promises to put a comprehensive immigration plan into place before those permits expire.

___

SOCIAL SECURITY:

Obama: Has not proposed a comprehensive plan to address Social Security's long-term financial problems. During budget negotiations in 2011, proposed adopting a new measurement of inflation that would reduce annual increases in Social Security benefits. The proposal would reduce the long-term financing shortfall by about 25 percent, according to the Social Security actuaries.

Romney: Protect the status quo for people 55 and over but, for the next generation of retirees, raise the retirement age for full benefits by one or two years and reduce inflation increases in benefits for wealthier recipients.

___

TAXES:

Obama: Wants to raise taxes on the wealthy and ensure they pay 30 percent of their income at minimum. Supports extending Bush-era tax cuts for everyone making under $200,000, or $250,000 for couples. But in 2010, agreed to a two-year extension of the lower rates for all. Wants to let the top two tax rates go back up 3 to 4 percentage points to 39.6 percent and 36 percent, and raise rates on capital gains and dividends for the wealthy. Health care law provides for tax on highest-value health insurance plans. Together with Congress, built a first-term record of significant tax cuts for families and business, some temporary.

Romney: Keep Bush-era tax cuts for all incomes and drop all tax rates further, by 20 percent, bringing the top rate, for example, down to 28 percent from 35 percent and the lowest rate to 8 percent instead of 10 percent. Curtail deductions, credits and exemptions for the wealthiest. End Alternative Minimum Tax for individuals, eliminate capital gains tax for families making below $200,000 and cut corporate tax to 25 percent from 35 percent. Does not specify which tax breaks or programs he would curtail to help cover costs.

___

TERRORISM:

Obama: Approved the raid that found and killed Osama bin Laden, set policy that U.S. would no longer use harsh interrogation techniques, a practice that had essentially ended late in George W. Bush's presidency. Largely carried forward Bush's key anti-terrorism policies, including detention of suspects at Guantanamo Bay despite promise to close the prison. Also has continued with military commissions instead of civilian courts for detainees and invocation of state secrets privilege in court. Expanded use of unmanned drone strikes against terrorist targets in Pakistan and Yemen. The deadly attack by militants on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, in September raised questions that persist about the quality of U.S. intelligence and about why requests for added security there were denied before the assault.

Romney: No constitutional rights for foreign terrorism suspects. In 2007, refused to rule out use of waterboarding to interrogate terrorist suspects. In 2011, his campaign said he does not consider waterboarding to be torture.

___

WAR:

Obama: Ended the Iraq war he had opposed and inherited, increased the U.S. troop presence in Afghanistan then began drawing down the force with a plan to have all out by the end of 2014. Approved use of U.S. air power in NATO-led campaign that helped Libyan opposition topple Moammar Gadhafi's government. Major reductions coming in the size of the Army and Marine Corps as part of agreement with congressional Republicans to cut $487 billion in military spending over a decade.

Romney: Proposes increase in military spending. Now fully endorses Obama's plan to end U.S. combat in Afghanistan in 2014. Would increase strength of armed forces, including number of troops and warships, adding almost $100 billion to the Pentagon budget in 2016. In addition, criticized congressional Republicans for negotiating a deficit-cutting deal with the White House that will mean automatic and massive cuts in Pentagon spending next year if federal budget deal is not reached in time.

Google reveals Nexus 4, Nexus 10 ... and more Nexus 7

2 hrs.

Google may have canceled the Android event which was scheduled for 7 a.m. PT/10 a.m. ET on Monday morning because of Hurricane Sandy, but that doesn't mean we're being deprived of gadget news. The Mountain View, Calif. company has announced a new LG-made?Nexus smartphone and a 10-inch tablet by Samsung.

As expected, thanks to rumors and leaks, the new Nexus smartphone is dubbed the Nexus 4. It?has a 4.7-inch screen with a "retina"-dense?320 pixels per inch which rivals the 326 ppi found on recent iPhones.?The phone has a powerful?quad-core processor, and will run Android 4.2. (This is still nicknamed Jelly Bean, in case you were tracking those silly things.) It will be available in an 8GB version for $299 and a 16GB version for $349. You can snag it as early as Nov. 13, unlocked and without contract. If you don't mind signing a two-year service agreement, then you can get a 16GB version from T-Mobile for $199.

What Google hasn't mentioned is whether or not there will be an LTE version of the Nexus 4, or?one that would?runs on carriers such as Verizon Wireless or Sprint, which don't support the announced specs. All the models listed are GSM/HSPA+, meaning in the U.S., they'll only run on AT&T and T-Mobile. Hopefully a phone supporting CDMA and LTE will be released in the coming months, so we'll keep asking.

The new Nexus 10 tablet also doesn't come as a surprise to those who have been paying attention to the rumor mill.?The device is a larger version of the popular Nexus 7 tablet. The?Samsung device offers a high-resolution 2560 x 1600 display (that translates to 300 ppi ? more dense than the latest iPad's?264 ppi).?According to Google, the Nexus 10 can handle up to nine hours of video playback and more than 500 hours of standby time on a single charge. ?Like the Nexus 4, it will ship with Android 4.2.?You can snag a 16GB version of the Nexus 10 for $399 and a 32GB version for $499. It will be available through the Google Play Store on Nov. 13.

But wait! There's more! Google also decided to offer up several more Nexus 7 models as well. The smaller tablet will now be available in a 16GB version and 32GB version, priced at $199 and $249, respectively. An additional 32GB model with HSPA+ connectivity will be offered through AT&T for $299, starting on Nov. 13.

Trial in 1977 killing asks: Were suspects framed?

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) ? Two black men wrongly convicted in the 1977 murder of a white Iowa police officer hope to prove something they couldn't during trials that sent them to prison for 25 years: that detectives framed them to solve a high-profile case.

During a civil trial that starts Wednesday in Des Moines, Terry Harrington and Curtis McGhee will argue that Council Bluffs police officers coerced witnesses into fabricating testimony against them in the killing of John Schweer.

Schweer was found dead while working as the night watchman at a car dealership. Harrington and McGhee, then teenagers from neighboring Omaha, Neb., say detectives used threats against a group of young black car theft suspects to trump up evidence targeting them because of their race and pressure to solve the retired captain's killing.

Despite little physical evidence, Harrington and McGhee were convicted at 1978 trials and sentenced to long prison terms. They were freed in 2003, after the Iowa Supreme Court found that prosecutors committed misconduct in concealing reports about another man seen near the crime scene with a shotgun. The key witnesses had also recanted their testimony, saying they were pressured into implicating the men.

After winning their freedom, they filed lawsuits against prosecutors and officers they blamed for forcing them to spend their adult lives in the Fort Madison prison. Their case reached the U.S. Supreme Court in 2009 over the issue of whether suspects have the constitutional right not to be framed by prosecutors. Before justices ruled, Pottawatamie County agreed to pay $12 million to settle claims against two former prosecutors while not admitting wrongdoing.

The settlement did not resolve claims against Council Bluffs and former detectives Dan Larsen and Lyle Brown.

Harrington and McGhee claim Larsen and Brown coerced the group of black car theft suspects into fingering them in the death. Investigators took the star witness, a 16-year-old confessed liar with numerous aliases, to the crime scene, gave him details about the murder weapon, and had him repeatedly change his story until it was plausible, the lawsuit claims.

The witness, Kevin Hughes, was aggressively questioned in Schweer's death after he was pulled over several weeks later driving a vehicle stolen from a Nebraska dealership. He first implicated three other men who had alibis before eventually claiming Harrington pulled the trigger and McGhee drove the getaway car after they went to steal a car from the dealership Schweer was guarding. Hughes said later he lied to get reward money and avoid being charged himself. Other witnesses also recanted.

Jurors will be asked to decide at trial, scheduled to last through Nov. 16, whether detectives, who were both white, and the city violated Harrington and McGhee's civil rights and, if so, how much they should receive in damages.

"We have waited for a very long time to have this trial and we look forward to having an opportunity to present our case," said Stephen Davis, an attorney for McGhee, now married and living in a Midwestern community he does not want to disclosure.

Facing a possible verdict of millions, lawyers for the detectives and the city are making an aggressive defense. They plan to argue that Harrington and McGhee probably were the real killers ? and that even if they weren't, detectives did nothing wrong in focusing on them as suspects under the circumstances.

"There is going to be evidence that this civil jury will hear surrounding Terry Harrington and Curtis McGhee's involvement in this crime and it's evidence that the juries in 1978 considered," said attorney Kristopher Madsen. "But importantly, we believe there's going to be lacking any credible evidence to indicate these two police detectives in any way fabricated evidence or coerced or threatened witnesses or violated any civil rights of Harrington and McGhee."

The stakes are high for the city because recent court rulings have concluded it will have little insurance coverage if liable.

Lawyers would not say how much compensation Harrington and McGhee would seek, but they plan to show jurors a mock prison cell to illustrate their lives behind bars. Harrington's daughter, born after he was imprisoned, is expected to testify about the former high school football player's long dream of freedom.

A key question will be why detectives stopped pursuing suspect Charles Gates. Police reports about Gates had been hidden from the defense and were uncovered in 1999 by a former prison barber who became convinced of Harrington's innocence and worked for years for his freedom.

They showed that witnesses reported seeing a man with a dog carrying a shotgun near the crime scene, where Schweer's bullet-riddled body was found surrounded by bloody dog prints. In the nights before his death, the police reports show Schweer reported having altercations with a white man carrying a shotgun and walking a dog ? something Gates was known to do.

Police questioned Gates, a 48-year-old loner, and he failed a lie-detector test. He had also been a suspect in an earlier unsolved murder. Investigators even consulted an astrologer about Gates, but ignored him after Hughes and other teens were stopped in the stolen car. Gates denied in a 2003 interview with police that he was involved in the slaying. Attempts to find Gates and reach him for comment were not successful.

"Larsen and Brown thought it was their lucky day. They could pin the murder on them, or use them to pin it on some 'ghetto dwellers'," plaintiffs' lawyers wrote, using a term detective Larsen once used to refer to Omaha residents. "Either way, Larsen and Brown would be putting blacks in front of a white Council Bluffs jury for the killing of a white Council Bluffs cop. That would mean case closed and they would be heroes."

Hurricane Sandy creates 'extreme conditions' for kite surfers ...

Hurricane Sandy may have kept most beachgoers out of St. Johns County?s waters.

But a few kiteboarders braved the waves.

?These were the best waves I?ve ever been in, in Florida,? said Chris Zub, of St. Augustine, who kitesurfed north of the St. Augustine Beach pier.

Five people competed in a kitesurfing competition north of the pier on Saturday, maneuvering the unusually large waves and strong winds that lingered along the coast. Kitesurfing involves surfing while attached to a harness that is attached to a large kite.

The contest was part of an all-weekend event hosted by Ocean Extreme Sports that featured kiteboarding and paddleboarding events, though some were canceled because of the weather.

Officials advised people to stay out of the water because of the rough surf and risk of rip currents.

Sustained winds were between 18 to 25 mph in the St. Augustine area on Saturday, said Marie Trabert, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. Gusts were more than 30 mph, and there was still a high risk of rip currents.

Hurricane Sandy combined with a high pressure system to the north to create conditions like a very strong nor?easter.

The hurricane was on its way past Florida on Saturday evening and was moving northeast at 13 mph with sustained winds of 75 mph. By mid-afternoon, all tropical storm watches and warnings had been discontinued in Florida.

However, the risk of rip currents is expected to remain high through this evening, Trabert said.

?People need to just stay tuned,? she said.

People are still advised to stay out of the water until conditions improve, said St. Johns County Fire Rescue spokesman Jeremy Robshaw.

St. Johns County Beach Manager Billy Zeits said coastal flooding was an issue, and all of the ramps flooded at some point on Friday.

?It?s hard to say if we can expect any changes tomorrow,? Zeits said. ?We have flooding at all of our beach ramps.?

Zeits said vehicle access to beaches could be restricted today.

Zub, one of the kitesurfing event organizers, said the dangerous conditions trimmed down the expected field of 20 competitors to just five. Despite the dangerous conditions, the waves were cleaner and bigger.

?The waves were as good as they get in St. Augustine,? he said.

?I had a couple of waves that were double overhead, and it gets your heart racing for sure. I was exhausted by the end of the day.?

Ed Toy kitesurfed Saturday and said the waves were between 10 and 15 feet. One surfer?s kite was destroyed by the waves, but he was not injured.

?We were kind of going back and forth today about whether to do the event,? he said. ?These are some extreme conditions.?

Messi hits 2 as Barcelona wins 5-0 at Rayo

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:09 p.m. ET Oct. 27, 2012

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -Lionel Messi scored twice to help Spanish leader Barcelona roll to a 5-0 win at Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, as coach Tito Vilanova set the best start for a first-year coach in the 113-year history of the Catalan club.

Cesc Fabregas set up David Villa's 20th-minute opener to set Barcelona on course. Messi scored his 16th and 17th goals in all competitions in a second half that also saw Xavi Hernandez and Fabregas find the net.

Barcelona's eighth win in its first nine games kept it unbeaten and lifted it three points ahead of Atletico Madrid before its game against last-place Osasuna on Sunday.

The no-nonsense win also let Barcelona keep the pressure on Real Madrid by opening up an 11-point gap ahead of the defending champion's tough test at Mallorca.

'Fringe' Star on the Shocking Death: It's Heroic and Peaceful

October 27, 2012 05:18:53 GMT
'I didn't want to die, because it was so awesome being on the show,' so says the actress whose character meets her demise in the latest episode of the FOX sci-fi series.

"" is not approaching its series finale without a shocking twist. After reuniting the Bishop clan early in the fifth season, the show [SPOILER ALERT!] killed off Etta, the grown-up daughter of Peter and Olivia, in the November 26 episode.

Georgina Haig, who portrays Etta, says she was as surprised as most fans when learning about her character's tragic fate. "Going into it, I didn't know exactly what was going to happen," she says. "When I got the call that I'd be doing the fifth season, I was excited, but I didn't know the trajectory of the character or even how many episodes I was doing. It's so secretive even for us!"

Claiming that she "was blown away" when she was first informed about it, the actress claims she tried to propose an alternative storyline for her character. "I was like, 'Joel [Wyman - showrunner], how about instead of her dying, she just falls unconscious and is locked into a cupboard, and they find her later?' " she shares. "I didn't want to die, because it was so awesome being on the show."

Still, she sees the decision to kill off Etta as a brave move as stating, "And yet it's so brave of them to put these characters through that trauma in episode 4, just a third of the way into the story. It's almost like an inciting incident."

Haig reveals that she didn't discuss with other cast members how Etta's death would affect their characters, but she does regret that there are still many things that haven't been explored in Etta's relationship with her mother Olivia. "I think it's really sad because, of course, a million things weren't resolved," she admits.

She further elaborates, "They got to that point where it had moved from uncomfortable to slightly more comfortable in this dynamic of being reunited. But I think she could see the strain between her parents and there was still so much she couldn't say and was still learning so much about herself. And her own world - her perspective of right and wrong [versus] Olivia's."

"If it was my choice I wouldn't have died and played out the family drama. [Laughs] There was a lot to explore, but there's [also] a lot for the writers to explore with me dying and the characters dealing with that. What happens next will, I'm sure, be very interesting - not that I have any idea what that is."

The Australian star, however, is relieved that Etta's death was not in vain. "If you're going to go, you want a hero's death," she says of the sacrifice that Etta made to kill many Observers. She additionally believes that her character died peacefully, gushing, "Before she dies, there's a moment of peace, almost like a relaxation, as she's thinking about how she has finally been loved - and she doesn't care that Windmark can see that, so she lets her guard down."

She continues explaining, "And while she has had support through her life, and she's had Simon [as a partner], it's just not the same. She never felt really loved until she reunited with [her parents]. And that's what makes her death peaceful in a way. She stops fighting [Windmark's thought-reading ] and let's that contentment wash over her."

Asked if Etta will return in a way or another to the show, Haig says, "It's so funny because I was all emotional, and everybody was just like, 'Ugh, whatever, Georgina, you'll just be back. It's Fringe. Everybody dies about four times.' And I was like, 'Yeah, but I've been obliterated into millions of pieces!' [Laughs] It wasn't just a death, it was a mega-death. It was a death with a full stop. So I don't know. Anything is possible."

"Fringe" is currently in its final season and will return with a new episode Friday, November 2. In the said outing, Peter and Olivia are still dealing with the aftermath of Etta's death, while the Fringe team reels and someone makes a pivotal and shocking move.
