All too often the pets of abuse victims become the target of the abuser. This is a control mechanism not only the victim, but for the pet as well. It has been known to be extremely violent and deadly. Children and pets are helpless and vulnerable in these cases, they are pawns in the hands of the abuser.
A program that helps the victim to protect his/her (yes there are male victims) beloved animals, while removing themselves/their children from the site/situation of abuse is something that should be available everywhere.
