Animal Owners Encouraged to Review Their Storm Plans?

- Emergency plans should include provisions for pets and large animals -

Broward County Emergency Management officials have cautioned residents and businesses to be prepared for possible flooding of low-lying areas, potential power outages and flood or tornado watches and warnings issued by the National Weather Service this weekend, stemming from Tropical Storm Isaac.

As a result, Broward County Animal Care and Adoption reminds pet owners and owners of large animals, such as horses, sheep and cattle, to review their preparedness plans and take appropriate steps to ensure animals are protected from these potential impacts.

Pet Preparedness

According to Lisa Mendheim, public education coordinator, Broward County Animal Care and Adoption, at this time, residents should:

???????? Ensure your pet has at least a two-week supply of food and water, packed in a waterproof container. For a full list of recommended contents for a Pet Survival Kit, visit broward.org/Hurricane and click HURRICANE A-Z GUIDE. Then select ANIMAL.

???????? Gather veterinary documents, including proof of current rabies vaccination and Broward County pet registration tag. In the event your pet becomes lost, the tag confirms your ownership so you can be contacted and reunited with your pet. Also, most boarding kennels, hotels and Broward County?s pet-friendly shelter require dogs and cats to have proof of current vaccinations. A second form of pet identification is also recommended, such as a microchip or separate identification tag with your phone number.

???????? Have a current photograph of your pet.

???????? If you plan on staying at home, designate an area in the house or garage for your dog?s bathroom needs.

???????? While an evacuation order is not expected for Tropical Storm Isaac, if you live in an evacuation zone, you should incorporate an evacuation plan into your family emergency plan. Never leave your pet behind. Broward County?s website, broward.org/Hurricane, has a list of pet-friendly hotels and information about Broward County?s pet-friendly shelter. Pre-registration is required for the pet-friendly shelter. Call the Humane Society of Broward County at 954-266-6871 for details.

Large Animal Registry

Preparation and planning for an emergency are important for all residents, but it?s especially important for owners of horses and other large animals. Besides taking the usual preparations that include having an ample supply of feed and water, owners are encouraged to register their large animals with the Broward County Large Animal Registry. Registration helps ensure that, in the aftermath of a storm or other emergency, large animals that get loose can be easily identified and returned to their owners.

To register a large animal, visit broward.org/hurricane and select the A-Z HURRICANE GUIDE from the left navigation, then click LARGE ANIMALS. Look for the link LARGE ANIMAL REGISTRY under ?Before the Event.?

The first step is to create an account. Once the account has been established, select OWNER/ANIMAL INFO and register each large animal separately. There is no limit to the number of animals registered under an account. An owner contact phone number must to be entered for each animal registered.
