KANSAS CITY, Mo. - At 10:30 Friday morning, the Orozco family called 911. A baby boy was crying on the living room floor with a bullet hole in his back.
According to police, a bullet shot from outside the home near 16th and Topping pierced the front wall and struck a 2-year-old boy in the back. Officials said he was conscious and alert when taken to an area hospital.
The family told 41 Action News the boy was watching a movie with his family at the time of the shooting.
Armando Orozco, 13, couldn't hold back tears Friday. He is the toddler?s older brother and was inside the home when he heard a gunshot and commotion downstairs.
?He was standing right here watching a movie and a gunshot came and my uncle put him down to the floor. He started crying and I saw blood on his back," Orozco explained as he recounted the seconds after the shooting.
Those memories will stick with the 8th grade boy for a long time, especially because he said his family was hoping to find a safer place to live.
"We were going to look at a house today," he said.
Orozco wasn?t able to tour homes with his mother on Friday. Instead, he got a front row seat to a criminal investigation.
?Apparently, our victim was by the front door area where the shots came in the house," explained Kansas City Police?s Sgt. Marisa Barnes. "Due to the angle of where the shots came from, they're still investigating whether it was an actual drive by or a person out on foot.?
Kansas City detectives spent 90 minutes canvassing the scene and eventually found shell casings a half block from the home. They tore down crime scene tape and vacated the area at noon Friday.
Police need those answers to find who is responsible. Until there is an arrest, Armando said he will not feel safe at home.
Police said four children and two adults in the home at the time of the shooting. Orozco was home from school Friday for a doctor?s appointment.
