A new tax on crockery imported into Europe from China will force up prices for cash-strapped consumers, according to the British Retail Consortium.
The European Commission gave importers only 24 hours? notice of its decision to levy the duty, sparking fury among retailers.
The Commission said that, from midnight, between 17.6 per cent and 58.8 per cent will be added to the dockside price of ceramic items, including plates, cups and oven dishes, arriving in the EU from China.
The duties are the result of a nine-month investigation by the Commission into allegations that Chinese producers have been dumping crockery
